MMS 4 — Live Satellite Tracking (NORAD 40485)

MMS 4 is one of NASA’s four Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft. The tracking catalog lists it as MMS 4 (NORAD catalog number 40485); follow it live on the WatchSat interactive 3D globe above. Its position is propagated in real time from the latest CelesTrak two-line element set using the SGP4/SDP4 orbital model — the same math professional trackers run. It is object D of 2015's 11th orbital launch (COSPAR designation 2015-011D). It went up together with 3 other satellites from that launch still in the active catalog.

Its speed swings from 0.63 km/s at apogee to 6.50 km/s at perigee. MMS 4 follows a highly elliptical orbit, completing a revolution every 84.2 hours. The orbit is strongly elliptical (eccentricity 0.8236): each revolution swings from 10,832 km at perigee out to 171,520 km at apogee. Inclined 73.3° to the equator, it overflies every latitude up to about 73° north and south. Its orbital plane crosses the equator northbound at right ascension 347.3°.

About the Other Active Satellites group

MMS 4 is one of 4,802 active satellites in WatchSat's general catalog — the broad population of Earth-observation, communications, science, amateur-radio and technology spacecraft outside the giant broadband constellations. Browse all other active satellites live in 3D.

Can you see MMS 4 from the ground?

Not with the naked eye. At its altitude MMS 4 is far beyond unaided visibility — following satellites this high takes a telescope and good timing. You can still track it precisely in the live 3D view above, or check the “When can I see it?” panel in the live view.
